Pretty Inane Things: Interview with Solid Gold's Matt Locher

With sincere apologies to Marilyn McCoo, Solid Gold is not just synonymous with an afro-infused flashy top 40 countdown dance show anymore. It's also a psych funk dance and groove band out of Minneapolis (by way of Wisconsin) who kick and make you shake some serious tush. The band, who sadly don't come with Solid Gold Dancers (although many audience members make for some nice ba dunk-a-dunk moments), recently released their EP "Synchronize," have showcased for years at various fests including SXSW, and are on to - what Peter Noone might sing off key - "something good." I spoke with one of the band's founders Matt Locher on their tour (dates include May 2 at Spaceland in L.A. and the Urban Lounge in Salt Lake City on May 6), their evolution, and some pretty inane things.

One of your tracks is called "Bible Thumper." What is it and how can I be one?
I'm pretty sure its a racist redneck, unfortunately some of our song titles don't have anything to do with the music. As for becoming one, just eat a ton of McDonald's and start hating whatever you can.
That's a bummer. I have to also admit I have a hard time dancing to the beat... at least at first, but I eventually find my way - albeit awkwardly. How can Solid Gold help me?
Solid Gold will not only give you private lessons on dancing, but will teach you how to hunt large game on safari, such as giraffes and cheetahs.
I think I'll stick with the dancing. How'd you come up with your unique sound by the way - so psych, keyboard happy... I could go on.
Listen to Wu Tang Clan in one ear and Oasis in the other. Done.
At what point will you know you've made it?
Of all the things that I've made today, "it" is not yet one of them. I hope to make "it" with my girlfriend later tonight.
Hey-o. Who has the best mustache ever and why?
This guy Frankie that comes into my work, he has really s----y breath though, so it kind of puts a damper on it.
Sad story. Who has the worst?
My friend's step-dad, Dennis.
Way to throw Dennis under the bus. Do you enjoy opening for others or do you prefer to headline right out of the gate?
My magic routine is getting better and better, so I hope to bring it to an opening slot soon.
What's your favorite song to cover?
We just recorded Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone" which was fun. My favorite song to cover is Sade's "Smooth Operator," h owever, I don't think singing to an imaginary cat in my backyard counts as a real cover.
It does in my household. What song has been covered way too much?
That one s----y Beatles song, "Across the Universe," I think it goes,"Nothing's gonna stop this song, Nothing's gonna stop this song,(from sucking)."
Ouch, I dig that song a bit. Shifting gears, does Bea Arthur's death change the way you view "Golden Girls" reruns?I'm a Blanche Devereaux man myself, but there is still a tear in my eye. By the way, how did you know that I watch so much "Golden Girls?"
I had a hunch. Lastly, does Marilyn McCoo know you guys rock the name of her show?Marilyn McCoo doesn't read blogs, so I think we're safe.
